I have a friend who likes to say that we, as a society, are chronically overstimulated, but we are also chronically understimulated.
That is, so much is overstimulating about our environments that we disassociate and then find the mundanity of daily life to be understimulating.
So much is highly stimulating that we find the ordinary banal. As we project that the ordinary is banal, we design it drab or accept it when offered in boring ways.
I think this is majorly at play in the relational minefield we find ourselves in, specifically as relates to romance, sexuality, and sensuality.
